¿Deberían los hombres congelar su esperma a los 18 años?

El doctor Kevin Smith de la Universidad Abertay en Dundee considera que se debería congelar el esperma de todos los hombres de 18 años para poder usarlo posteriormente debido a los riesgos que supone ser padre a una edad avanzada.

La calidad del esperma va disminuyendo con la edad, incrementando el riesgo de autismo, esquizofrenia y otras afecciones. Por ello, el doctor considera que la congelación de esperma en los hospitales debería convertirse en “norma habitual”.

Además, añadía que “es el momento de tomarnos seriamente la situación de la edad paterna y su efecto en la próxima generación de niños.
Si las tendencias demográficas de paternidad tardía continúan, podría conllevar que más niños sufrieran desórdenes genéticos.”

Así, según el Dr. Smith, aunque no exista una edad fija a la hora de ser padre, la gente a partir de los 40 podría querer utilizar su esperma congelado a los 18 años, momento en el que se encontraría en condiciones ideales.

Actualmente, la media de edad de paternidad en Inglaterra y Gales es de 33 años, cuando a principios de 1990 era de 31 años.

La Sociedad de Fertilidad Británica a través de su presidente, el profesor Adam Balen ha salido al paso de estos comentarios afirmando que esa postura “supondría una visión muy artificial de la procreación y una falsa sensación de seguridad ya que la tecnología no garantiza un bebé”.

Sheena Lewis, presidenta de la Sociedad Británica de Andrología comentaba que “los hombres deberían pensar en sus futuras familias a una temprana edad. Necesitamos extender el mensaje de que realmente es una mejor idea tanto para hombres como para mujeres tener hijos entre los 20 y los 40 años”.
